#2 Life Purpose: Why isn't my passion enough?
Ever gone chasing after what you love only to find yourself losing interest in it after a while, thinking "...this isn't what I expected. Where's the fun?"
The problem with not knowing your Life Purpose, what truly fulfils and satisfies you at your deepest level, is that you'll dive deeply into your passion, what fascinates you and excites you, and for a while that enthusiasm will carry you over the icky bits, the challenges along the way, but as time goes on you'll start to notice you're losing your 'va-va-voom', your drive and passion for your subject, leaving you feeling deflated because you thought you'd found your 'thing' but it's not all you hoped it would be.
It's not the passion or what fascinates you that is the problem. In fact they are definitely a big clue as to what you need to be doing now, but the true satisfaction comes from how you follow your passion or whatever is firing you up right now.
Your Life Purpose is how you you need to do what you do, the what being following your passion, what lights you up. For instance if your purpose is to be a leader, then what will fulfil and satisfy you at the deepest level is to be in charge, to have a vision that you inspire others to join you in creating. Respect for yourself and for others is one of your most ingrained values and needs to be a central aspect of everything you do for you to feel satisfied and complete.
Here's an example of how you might get things wrong...
You love shopping; for you, being let lose in a clothing store is like a kid being given free rein in a sweet shop. You're also passionate about helping women, especially younger women feel more confident, and stand up for themselves better. So you start your business teaching young women how to shop economically and dress themselves so they feel confident, coaching them while you help them shop, to stand up for themselves. The thing you don't consider is that hidden below the surface of who you're being is what really fulfils you, bringing people (or things) together and getting people who are very different to work as a team. This need is partly satisfied by creating ensembles for your clients' wardrobes but that'll never be enough for you. That's you playing small... and slowly you begin to wonder what you're doing wrong, why your business isn't exciting you or anyone else any more. The thought is there: "Maybe I should do something else?"
Once you know your Life Purpose, you know you don't need to do anything else you just need to do it differently, work with the young women in groups, show them how to support each other and work together to get the same outcomes... then the light goes on for you and you're coming up with so many ideas it's hard to focus you on which to do first!
Your passion is rarely enough. For most people, you'll need to know your Life Purpose to allow your passion to become your mission, to become the vehicle through which you make a difference in this world.
Just know that passions may change, but your Life Purpose won't, so as long as you know your Life Purpose you can do anything you want and experience a sense of meaning and fulfilment from your work.
You can fulfil many different missions, many different passions, make a difference in so many ways, once you understand how you need to act when completing those missions for you to feel fulfilled.
This also means that you can live your Life Purpose at a bigger and bigger level, only the how remains the same. It means that you can do a lot of different work in the world, solving lots of problems at lots of levels and still getting the sense of purpose living your Life Purpose gives you.
